What’s Right About the Church (Part 3)
As we continue thinking about what’s right about the church, the second thing I noticed in this passage (1 Corinthians 1:4-9) is the statement that Paul tells the church at Corinth that “Through him [Christ], God has enriched your church in every way…”
What does it mean for the church to be enriched by God? Based on the meanings of the word “enriched”, I think it could mean at least a couple of things. The first is to be made rich. Ephesians 1:3 says that God “has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.” Remember, not all blessings are physical or material blessings. In fact, we are NEVER promised that we will be rich materially. We are told, however, that if we are united with Christ, we are already rich spiritually. How rich? How does “every spiritual blessing” sound.
The other meaning of “enriched” has to do with making something better. The church is a united gathering of individuals. While we are individuals, as the church we are greater than the sum of our parts. Allow me to illustrate. I drive a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. With the proper tools, I can completely disassemble my truck. If I disassemble my truck and place all the parts in the parking lot, do I have a truck? I have all the components. I have all the parts. I do not have a truck. It is only a truck when it has been put together properly to operate as it is designed. My truck is greater than the sum of its parts, and so is the church. We are assembled and made complete by God. We are better than we would otherwise be. We are enriched by God.
For the church at Corinth, their enrichment included eloquent words and knowledge. God certainly gives us those things as well. He gives us the words and knowledge we need to share the Gospel with others and disciple them as we add them to the church. But our enrichment does not end there. The reality is that anything and everything we have is thanks to God’s enrichment of us.
Remember, the church belongs to Christ and God enriches the church. This is part of what’s right about the church.
How has your church been enriched? Do you recognize it as coming from God?
