Culture Shift by R. Albert Mohler Jr.

December 16, 2010

Al Mohler has to be one of the sharpest minds in all of contemporary Christendom. He is president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He has also become the public voice for many conservative evangelicals. He is also a bit of a lightning rod when it comes to many controversial topics. I guess that is the natural result when you are willing to speak out on most any of these topics. But Mohler does not speak out with the typical knee-jerk type of statements that previous evangelical “leaders” such as Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and (to some degree) James Dobson have. While I disagree with some of Mohler’s theology, I want to give him credit for rooting his comments deeply in Scriptural truth.

Culture Shift is a collection of twenty essays that deal with current western culture, especially American, from a specifically Biblical perspective. In doing so, he gives Bible-believing Christians a conservative response to issues ranging including:

  • Education

  • Abortion

  • Terrorism

  • Torture

  • Race relations

  • Natural disasters

  • History

I found this to be a great little book. While it was a little academic, it was still very readable. If you struggle with how to engage some of today’s cultural issues from a uniquely Biblical perspective, you need to read this book. I highly recommend it.
