D6 Conference 2011: Voddie Baucham

September 23, 2011

Voddie Baucham wears many hats. He is a husband, father, pastor, author, professor, conference speaker and church planter. He currently serves as Pastor of Preaching at Grace Family Baptist Church in Spring, TX. He has served as an adjunct professor at the College of Biblical Studies in Houston, TX, and Union University in Jackson, TN. He has also lectured at Southern Seminary.

Voddie makes the Bible clear and demonstrates the relevance of God’s Word to everyday life. However, he does so without compromising the centrality of Christ and the gospel. Those who hear him preach find themselves both challenged and encouraged. Voddie’s area of emphasis is Cultural Apologetics. Whether teaching on classical apologetic issues like the validity and historicity of the Bible, or the resurrection of Christ; or teaching on biblical manhood/womanhood, marriage and family, he helps ordinary people understand the significance of thinking and living biblically in every area of life.

Baucham’s session is to connect cultural apologetics, including biblical manhood and womanhood, with marriage and family and how to pass the faith on to the next generation. The culture wars are not political but spiritual. If you want to go back to a different time, you should go back to Genesis 2. The culture war started in Genesis 3. We have lost focus of the central issue. The issue is the battle between the Word of God versus the word of man.

He then outlined the culture war in strictly biblical terms. There was so much and I can only take so many notes. Sorry, I did the best I could. Below are some key points.

Adam did not ask for a woman. God provided her. Marriage is God’s idea. He gets to define it.

The case for male headship:

  • Woman was made after man.

  • Woman was made for man.

  • Woman was made from man.

  • Woman was brought to man.

  • Woman was named by man (twice).

Purposes for marriage:

  • Procreation

  • Illustration

    • Physical representation of scripture

    • Representation of trinity

      • Man from God

      • Woman from man

      • Children from woman and man

  • Sanctification

    • Active

    • Passive : learning to live with another sinner

After the fall:

  • Roles reversed

  • Alienation from God

  • Offenders cursed

  • Redeemer promised

Feel free to add questions and comments. I will respond as soon as practical.
